How do I relieve my newborn’s constipation?
I have a 3 wk-1day old bby girl n she has been constipation. i have called her pediatrician and she said to message her rectum with a digital thermometer n vaseline, put a small doseof karo syrup in her formula, or use a suppository. i tried the thermometer n it didnt work. i am a young mother so i am afraid to try the other two…any more ideas?…
please help
I would be nervous about the karo syrup too. I’m surpised the thermometer didn’t work, did you actually take her temp with it (stik it in?) That always worked for me. Here’s more info from moms with newborns: http://www.thebump.com/stages/stage.aspx?stage=months06
My mom showed me how to do this. And it wounds weird, but what the doctor told you will work.
You have to put vaseline on the tip of the thermometer, and stick it just a tad up the rectum. It will give the baby a feeling of needing to push, and the poo should come out easy.
The suppositories work just as well, I use glycerin suppositories, you just stick them in, and let them sit there for a couple minutes. She should go poo in no time.
And it may be gas too, try using Mylicon drops to relieve the gas pains.
Good Luck!!
Are you sure she is constipated? I would be very careful about giving her anything without speaking to a professional first. If you are breastfeeding, just remember it is NORMAL for them not to go for a week or so because breast milk is so easily digested. My daughter would go on average once every 5 or so days when I was breastfeeding.
The Karo syrup won’t hurt the baby and it does work, I have used that remedy several times and plus the doctor said you could try it. As far as the suppositories go, they are good too..when I had to first use them with my son he was very very small and the ones I got which were for infants still seemed too big or at least I thought they were so I just cut them in half and just hold it in place the temp. inside the rectum melts it away quickly and does help baby feel better. Being a new mother, and even if you aren’t a new mother trial and error means everything. Try it..if it doesn’t work then don’t do it anymore and try something new..Good luck
You can buy some prune juice! Give her about an once, mix it with an once of water. It works every time and it is totally safe! I had the same problem with my son when he was 4 weeks! Poor lil baby, I hope she feels better soon *hug*
karo isn’t bad for baby we put it on our pancakes its nice and sweet..i would use a suppository..i didn’t have any luck either with the thermometer..try switching what she eats..if you breastfeed get some formula and make it sweet with the karo..with it being a change she should poo..try and lay her on your legs belly down and rub her back..that will relax her so maybe she could just let it flow
i always used the same method that my grandmother and her mother used when my daughter was a baby and was constipated i got some soapy water warm water and baby soap stirred it up until i saw suds and then got an aspirator and injected the soapy water into the rectum and within minutes the baby had a poop it works it might sound uncomfortable but trust me it works very well and fast
karo syrup i use to use to encourage the drinking of water.
I would try either the suppository or – if she hasn’t done for 5 or more days – Rochaun’s mini-enema (which is safer than most stimulant laxatives, so long as you use glycerine soap). Either one will help her do a dooey in 5-20 minutes.
How do you help a 11 day old newborn with constipation?
okay i know this may sound wrong but it is what the doc told me to do is get some vasaline and a qtip and slowly stick it in an out of the bum, it helps to loosen it up for easy goin, if that don’t work or you are not feeling like doin that give him/her some caro syrup just a little it won’t hurt and it run anything out, hope this helps
breast feeding is the best choice but it your not the milk that your giving him is not working have doctor recomend a different once also get the bottles w the plastic bags reduce air bubbles and reduses constipation also warm baths and belly massages
try giving him/her 2oz of water after the morning bottle and 2oz after the the last bottle you can also try rubbing there tummy with baby oil
Breastfeeding If you can. If you can’t talk to your pediatrician about switching from a soy-based formula to a milk-based one (or visa-versa if you are on the other). I bottle fed, and used a TINY amount of acidophilus/Bifidus from inside an opened caplet in the bottle when my second one had that problem.
best choice is to feed the baby oily but nutritious food
or u could give the baby dairy products they work best
If on formula, talk to the doctor about switching.. they are so used to this question I’m sure they’ll be very helpful. Also, don’t give your baby any bottles of water only without talking to your doctor. Mine said only after 3 months could she have water.
coloxal drops… well thats what its called in nz… just ask the doc or chemist to be sure
I thought my newborn had constipation because he seemed to strain and grunt. But when I called theoffice, they told me that constipation in newborns is when they pass pellet like balls of stool. If your baby is having a bowel movement then he is not constipated. Straining or grunting is not a sign of constipation. Also, if he is not having a bowel movement at least once in a 24 hour period, you may need to talk to the doctor who can diagnose it best.
How do you know your baby has constipation? Some breastfed babies will go days without a poo, and theyre not constipated. If your baby is formula fed, and is definitely constipated, try give some lukewarm boiled water between feeds, and if this doesnt work, try giving some infacol – it might move things along.
a themometer, or a suppository which you can buy otc. My daughter had the same problem at that age. I also gave her like .5 oz of prune jucie
GET AN EAR BUD CLEANER AND DIP IT IN BABY OIL THEN PUT IT NEAR HIS LITTLE BOTTOM CAREFULLY NEAR HIS ANUL OR ALSO SQUEZING AN ORANGE ABOUT 2 SMALL SPOONS WITH BOILED WATER CAN HELP IF YOUR BOTTLE FEEDING ALSO TRY BOILED WTER WITH A SMZLL AMOUNT OF BROWN SUGER OR GRIPE WATER
Well, since the least addictive/damaging remedies are in fact the rectal ones – I say try the ear bud trick, and if it doesn’t work you can give him an infant size (1 gram) glycerin suppository.
try a little sugary water is a naturl stool loosener
